The streak continues. The Atlanta Firebirds picked up their fourth-straight win, going on the road again and beating the Seattle Orcas 27-24.
“We’ve only played two home games so far, and I love the way my guys have responded,” said Atlanta coach Rob Ryan. “They’re a bunch of road warriors. Wherever they are, they’re ready to bust you in the mouth.”
The Firebirds shook off on early 10-0 deficit with their second defensive touchdown in as many weeks. Joplo Bartu scooped up a fumble and returned it 45 yards for a score to get on the board, and Matt Breida added a 7-yard touchdown run to pull in front 14-10.
Isaiah Crowell punched it in from three yards out for his second score of the game, but Atlanta drove 51 yards in 35 seconds to set up a 42-yard Wil Lutz field goal at the buzzer to send the game into halftime tied 17-17.
After a scoreless third quarter, Lutz put his team in front on a 48-yard boot. Breida added his second score of the night from eight yards out midway through the final frame.
Seattle got back within three points in the final minute, but Atlanta recovered the onside kick to seal the victory.
The offense didn’t need to do much, but they were efficient. Matt Barkley completed 15 of 30 for 156 yards and no scores or turnovers. Matt Breida was the star of the offense, running for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns, along with 6 catches for 53 yards.
Mike Hilton and Bartu shared the team lead with 9 tackles. Trade acquisition Danielle Hunter notched 2 sacks in his Atlanta debut, and Tyson Graham hauled in an interception.
The 4-2 Firebirds look for their fifth-straight victory this week when they return to town for their third home game of the year when they host the 3-3 Boston Dragons.
